Le nomination agli Emmy Award 2023 sono arrivate e molti osservatori dei premi si chiedono una cosa: chi sarà EGOT quest'anno? Acronimo di Emmy, Grammy, Oscar e Tony, l'EGOT è il grande slam di premi di Hollywood e solo una manciata di celebrità (come Audrey Hepburn, Whoopi Goldberg, Mel Brooks e Jennifer Hudson) sono entrate nella lista. Durante la stagione dei premi 2022-2023, un'altra icona si è unita allo storico gruppo: Viola Davis, che ha vinto i Grammy 2023 per aver narrato l'audiolibro del suo libro di memorie, Finding Me.
Il termine EGOT è stato creato da Philip Michael Thomas, un attore diventato famoso per il suo ruolo in Miami Vice e coniò il termine nel 1984 ma che in realtà non vinse mai nessuno dei premi. La prima persona a raggiungere veramente lo status di EGOT fu Richard Rodgers, che ottenne il titolo nel 1962 dopo aver vinto un Emmy per la musica originale composta per Winston Churchill: The Valiant Years. L'unico finora ad aver vinto due volte con EGOT è il cantautore Robert Lopez, che ha fatto la storia nel 2018 quando ha vinto gli Oscar per la canzone Remember Me di Coco, il che significa che ha vinto ciascuno dei premi almeno due volte. Sua moglie e partner creativa, Kristen Anderson-Lopez, ha condiviso molti di questi onori con lui, ma è ancora un Tony lontano dal suo EGOT.
Nel frattempo, un certo numero di star stanno aspettando dietro le quinte per il loro tentativo di raggiungere la gloria dell'EGOT. A Cynthia Erivo, Lily Tomlin, Ben Platt e Lin-Manuel Miranda bastano gli Oscar per vincere, e star come Taylor Swift, Adele, Jodie Comer, Lizzo e H.E.R. sono a metà strada.
